Texture: The natural surface of cut or split sandstone has a tactile quality, slightly rough, with natural face grain following the stone’s bedding planes. Weathering enhances this texture over time.

Jointing: In dry-stone walls, the shadow lines between stones create a pattern that reads well visually. In mortared walls, recessed pointing (mortar set back from the stone face) reinforces this pattern. Construction method: Is the proposed construction consistent with the local vernacular (dry-stone, or mortared with recessed lime-based pointing)? Modern construction methods that deviate significantly from historic practice are more difficult to justify.

Scale and proportion: Is the wall height and length consistent with the existing pattern of retaining walls in the street or on the property? A new wall significantly taller than its neighbours requires specific justification.

Mortar specification: Where mortar is used, is it lime-based or an appropriately specified NHL mortar? Grey Portland cement mortar in a heritage sandstone wall is visually jarring and structurally inappropriate (it is harder than the stone and can cause spalling at the joint edges).
